How did the story of Hook an Angel come about?

How did it all begin.

I grew up poor, the second oldest of eight kids. Four girls, four boys. With a large family as that, finding accommodations to fit us all was challenging. We moved to the Darst-Webbe housing projects when I was in middle school. High-rise buildings for low-income families. We were on the top floor (before moving to a different building on a lower floor). Many times, I would stand looking out the window to watch the people...and the action. I saw many things I should not have seen.

My window faced a major street that led to downtown St. Louis. Often times a car would break down and those needing help, I wondered what the "friendly neighbors" would do. So, I first wrote a story about a rich woman's car breaking down and a friendly gentleman stopped to help her.

I was pretty young to write such a sexy story. After I left for college, many of those handwritten stories were lost. Fast forward decades later, I wanted to write a story about a one-night stand. Somehow, I recalled the premise of this story about a car breaking down. I wrote a short story about two strangers having a one-night stand before the woman drops a bomb on him.

A few years later, I added even more when I decided to write 50K words in 30 days for a writing challenge. I did not get far, so it sat incomplete for a few more years. After attending a virtual conference in 2020, I learned of the writing platform Wattpad. I wanted to put up my sexy soap opera that I was handwriting for years. That was a flop. The platform wanted novels, not a crazy episode by episode story. So, I dug through my unfinished projects folder and pulled up Hook an Angel. I posted the few chapters I had written and suddenly...it blew up!

So maybe I can write a decent book, I said to myself. Hook an Angel went on to make the Wattys shortlist and win an Amby award. I decided to self-publish the book and open it to a broader audience.

So, there you have it. If you have not read my debut contemporary romance go check it out and tell me what do you think.
